I too played PL with Paul Phillips right before he won last year's WPT Borgata tourney, and I agree with your statement. Very fun to play with as well, since his play elevated my thinking to a new level every time we were in a hand together. This was highly against casino rules, but he used his camera phone to take a picture of his hand, then slid his phone over to me to show me that I folded to an 8 hi bluff. Made the game interesting for sure. However, I'm not so sure he would've had the same success in a high stakes limit game.

They're both sports and your a good athlete, but it's still a major adjustment that's hard to make, and only a few can......... like Tony Gonzalez and Ronald Curry.

You left out Antonio Gates.

A lot of people who have done well in tourneys are terrible at poker. We have all seen fish sit down at a 30/60 game and win $5000 when he goes on a rush. When the buyin is $10,000 a rush pays out better.

I've played with one TV tourney player, nothing special he came in 16th I think in the WSOP. He seemed pretty straight forward when I played him. We chatted some, I got the impression he just was lucky in the WSOP. I agree with Paluka.

Rather, to be more accurate, I bet Paluka is right, that's the impression I get based on everything I've heard and read on the subject.

I have no idea, but to say "a lot" of the TV winners are no good poker players is a little overboard. Some of the guys who have done well on the WPT do suck (there was one player who won in season 2 I think that would get killed in my local 1/2 no limt game), but I wouldn't say "a lot".

Some of them are just good NL players and bad limit players. That doesn't mean they can't play poker. Some people are good at stud, but suck at Omaha 8. There just different games. Same thing for limit vs NL.

Here's some more speculation for you:

Tournies and ring games are vastly different. (In my oppinion, the difference between LHE tourney play in the middle and late stages and LHE ring play is bigger than the difference between LHE and PLO ring games.)

Each different ring game (for me at least) takes considerable time and effort to get good at.

Maybe a lot of the tourney pros who suck at ring games just haven't put in the time and effort to gain profficienty or maybe they cannot easily switch between the two winning styles of play (i.e. the winning tourney style and winning ring game style).

There are certainly a lot of successful tourney players who are good at ring games, too.
