Default Raymer, helmuth, philips TV observations

I have taped all the recent WPT and wsop shows that have been broadcast on local airwaves over the last 2 months, and would like to make the following observations based on some of these poker personalities......

Raymer...finally saw that much talked about incident between him and Matusow, and i like how classy he handled himself under the circumstances. The good guy came through and did win in the end, kudos.....but would like to ask if that did intimidate him or shake up his game at all?

Hellmuth - for all the abuse he takes on the forums and elsewhere for his whining and bratty attitude, i must say, he did take some nasty drawouts to corkins, mohamed, magician, TJ etc.. the whining doesnt help, but the sheer number of longshots that hit on him has been incredible. And while everyone goes through that from time to time, i doubt anyone can say that happened on national TV with millions of dolars on the line....and i don't like phil very much, i bumped into him a couple of years ago at the orleans and was kind of rude, yet i gotta give him credit for outplaying his opponents at table, then getting some ridiculous suckouts.

Philips ....just saw the bellagio classic after viewiing the bike one where philips was second. Hard to feel sorry for a 20 something multimillionaire who gets to play poker for any limits for fun now, but when he finished 2nd there were about 5 hands where he found himself in a coinflip situation on whether to call or fold....and in each case he made the wrong decision, ending up in a bitter exit and losing the bike title. Then, in almost poetic justice fashion he seemed to make all the right final table coinflip decisions to win it all....credit to him for also outplaying hanson in my opinion, but might it have been different had hanson sat behind him instead of other way around? And Paul, thanks for making frequent visits to the boards, we appreciate your insights from the final tables you play.

Duke - reading some of the public message baords, you'd think she was this nasty, self centred, woman power toting, disrespecting fiend (with smelly feet).....from the limited amounts of her i saw on TV, she doesnt seem that way at all. She seems like a regular good top tournament poker player who happens to be female, who gets much press for that, but also much abuse in these male dominated circles.
And if she does sometimes showoff or talk down to others at the tables, the same could be said for hundreds of others, but maybe because its un-"ladylike", she rubs others the wrong way with it.

Matusow - he is a jerk.

The incident that I believe you are referring to occurred on the last hand before a break. I went with Fossilman to the Golden Gate Casino accross from Binions during that break. I cannot speak for Fossilman. But from my observations I believe that Matasou's action ticked Greg off a little bit but did not affect his play. Greg got up from the table after the incident and walked to the Golden Gate with me and Gary Hart. By the time we got there Greg had forgotten about the incident and was very relaxed and, I felt, very confident.

I watched Helmuth on quite a few TV tournaments. I believe that if he were a bit more humble and did a bit less whining he would get the admiration he appears to so desperately seek.

I think Phillips handles himself very well on TV. I do not agree that he out played Hanson. I too thank him for participating in this forum as I'm sure given the opportunity he would reciprocate by showing his heretofore secret admiration for me. It's o.k. Paul, I know how you really feel.

Annie Duke was, in my opinion, very likeable during the TOC at the RIO that aired on 21 Sept. I did not like a comment she made in a womens tournament I watched that was on TV earlier this year. When she was knocked out she made some comment to the effect that the last two players in the tournament were not two she would have given any chance of getting there. It came accross as arrogance. But I think she deserves the benefit of the doubt given her last gracious performance against all those big boys she beat.

espn should show the clip of matasou cursing out raymer, and then show matasou crying like a little girl after getting knocked out with his AK against AQ

You have to be joking, don't you? Hellmuth outplayed no-one. The likes of Corkins and Esfandiari owned hellmuth. Hellmuth was so outplayed it is laughable that he thinks he's the best.

I know. You'd think she knew the cameras were on her or something. BTW, are you calling Daniel Negreanu a liar?

I guess we're finally seeing all the same shows. It's tough being months behind the airings we read about here and then have to wait and wait to see.

Hellmuth has to be the most intriguing character in the game. No wonder ESPN makes sure hee gets coverage no matter what, they love to have a villain. Denying his brilliance is just being stubborn, he gets his money in as a favorite so often that when he loses it is almost always a come from behind. But how can someone with such an advanced intelligence, be so emotionally immature? Honest to god, when I hear him I hear my children...when they were younger. They've all grown out of it now, except the 9 year old who sometimes displays Hellmuth like tantrums.

The TOC was on last night, and Phil hit a one-outer to beat Johnny Chan(they kept calling it a 2 outer, but I'm sure the Tc would have given Chan a flush), who grimaced and left like a grown up, while Phil crowed again, doesn't seem to matter which side he ends up on. THen the rant after losing to ANnie was just so childish. I'm willing to bet that not one of the other 9 at that table wanted to see Phil win.

A comment I wanted to add, was that most of the poker has been exceptional, the coverage of the final table of the WSOP was not. WIth 10 players and only 1 hour to show it, every hand was an elimination it seemed. I wish they had splint that final table into 2 episodes and let us get a feel for some of the play. It seemed to me Josh Arieh was losing big all-in races, then the next hand he was back up to 8 million chips. I'd like to know how he got there.

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but do you always implicitly wish anal rape upon those who act in a rude or childish manner?
