Here's why I think you should bet the turn:

These ridiculous flop checks after preflop raises often signal big bets. But sometimes they are big pairs that become underpairs (KK?).

Of course you bet the flop. And he called. Some guys will call all the way here with KK, even JJ. What limits were you playing?

On the turn, I don't like the checkdown because folding to the checkraise is so easy. If you checkdown here with the plan of calling a river bet, you lose one bet either way. And I think you have to call the river bet, because you just encouraged him to bet KK.

When he does have KK, he's probably calling down the entire way.

Occasionally, you may lose out on a three-outer. But I don't really think anyone checks AK on the flop here. Really, you're looking at some really high numbers against this guy not having a set.

So I think it's an easy turn bet even expecting the checkraise because he's calling down with KK here so often. I think this situation is an extension of the frequent bet the river because he'll call but not bet worse hands. I know you are in last position, but it works here anyways; this is really a three opportunity game where you act first and third and are going to have the same relative hand each time. You're losing one bet when you're losing (a lot) no matter what, but often gaining two when you're winning (only occasionally).

If I thought there was a reasonable chance this person would fold KK on the turn, none of this would apply. But there's not. Also, a player who would wait until the river to checkraise or who would call the turn and bet the river would really screw this up, but who plays like that when playing in such a manner against the typical opponent would be stupid, and few players who don't think about such things would even consider this line?

I think you're right and he should have checked the turn and called the river.

This is a situation where it's heads-up and free card is not dangerous. There's a good chance the villain was slowplaying trips. By checking it only costs one bet to keep him honest. A check can also gain you a bet if your opponent has nothing and takes a shot on the river. It is similar to when you check behind on the turn with aces and there is a pair on board.

Mason played a hand that was similar to this one. He had AQ with an ace on the flop. Mason checked behind on the turn and he some pretty good reasons for it.

People do that sometimes when it's heads-up. It happens more often on Party 15/30. It is better to miss a single value bet on the turn than risk getting moved off the entire pot.
