Default What do I do when I have a decent hand and this happens...

Party Poker 1/2 Hold'em (10 handed) converter

Preflop: Hero is BB with 7[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img], 2[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img].
UTG calls, UTG+1 folds, UTG+2 folds, MP1 calls, MP2 calls, MP3 folds, CO folds, Button calls, SB folds, Hero checks.

Flop: (5.50 SB) 2[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img], T[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img], 7[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] (5 players)
Hero bets, UTG calls, MP1 calls, MP2 calls, Button folds.

Turn: (4.75 BB) 6[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] (4 players)
Hero bets, UTG calls, MP1 folds, MP2 calls.

River: (7.75 BB) 8[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] (3 players)
Hero checks, UTG checks, MP2 checks.

Final Pot: 7.75 BB

Results in white below:
Hero has 7s 2s (two pair, sevens and twos).
UTG has Tc Qs (one pair, tens).
MP2 has Ts Jc (one pair, tens).
Outcome: Hero wins 7.75 BB.

I always tend to check. Most of the time, I am beaten by a person holding one of the two necessary straight cards. Should I call the bet anyway when an opponent bets after my check?

On a board like this, I bet the river and fold to a raise. You should really review the sections in TOP and SSH on river betting.

Yeah, I've been meaning to re-read SSH.

Thanks

That river could give someone a runner-runner gutshot straight. Possible, but not very likely. Going into check/call mode here is very weak.

In general, I might or might not worry about someone who might have an OESD on the flop (if the river could complete their straight). I don't worry much about gutshots or backdoors, unless there are a lot of opponents. Meaning, I won't go into check/call mode.

BTW what 2 cards are you talking about? Only a 9 makes the straight here.

Make a note on them, and bet into them to induce a bluff, then call a raise. Just make sure you note them carefully, as most of the time you're raised on the river, the player has the goods.

bet this river.

you won't get raised by anything that can't beat middle and bottom pair. so you can safely fold to a raise.

Have to checkraise this flop. You have a weak 2 pair on a flush board any T, overcards or a flushdraw will likely bet here so would 98.

Bet the river, against 2 opponents is pretty unlikely that one has a 9, against 3 I would probably check/call.

You are confident enough in your reads at this table that you know one of these players is going to bet here?

I lead out with this hand 100% of the time, as giving a free card here is quite possibly the worst thing you can do.

Bottom two pair with a flush and straight draw is no place to get tricky on the flop. Bet the flop
