Default \"Shoot em\' up buttercup\"...

"Shoot em' up buttercup"...Daniel Negreanu on WPT Poker Corner

Daniel Negreanu said that was a legally binding raise or at the very least he said they could hold you to that.

I thought the precise word is "raise" and only that one that will bind you to raising the pot. What's the official word?

Because there is no standardized rulebook in poker...it depends on where you are playing. I've seen the call both ways on "remarks" like this.

Formal rules of poker:
http://www.diamondcs.net/~thecoach/RobsPkrRules3.htm

"8. A verbal statement denotes your action and is binding. If in turn you verbally declare a fold, check, bet, call, or raise, you are forced to take that action."

And that is what Daniel meant. We use lots of words and phrases besides "raise" to indicate that we are raising. In my game, we usuually say, "upstairs" when we want to raise. If somebody said that and then changed his mind, he would have to raise the minimum. It's like that everywhere.

At Garden City, I was in a hand where on the river a guy bet, someone raised, and the original bettor, with a pretty sheepish look on his face, says "One more time" and throws in three chips to call. It was pretty clear he meant "I'll call one more bet" and didnt want to raise (as most people intend when they say "one more time.") The dealer said it was a raise; the floor was called over and agreed.
