Gerry Drehobl?

Haven't found much on this guy, but isn't he a hero to all of us non-professionals? He supposedly picked up the game 6 mos. before the WSOP, and takes home a bracelet, overcoming a field of 538. He defeated Paul Phillips, John Juanda, Daniel Negreanu, Mike Matusow and Ram Vaswani at the final table, with Howard Lederer, Dutch Boyd, and Mel Judah lurking on the bubble.

From what I remember about the broadcast, he seemed to play solid poker. Any comment from the pros? Particularly Paul, who played with Gerry at the final table? Is this guy legit? Did he get extremely lucky?

Either way, he's my hero (one of them, anyway).

He clearly caught a ton of premium hands at the final table. It would've been difficult for anyone to lose with those cards. Still he did make it to the final table in that large and very strong field which deserves credit.

Not to take anything away from the guy, but a lot of people would be able to win if they could just call people's all-in preflop with QQ a couple times, and have it hold up.

I don't remember much from the event and I don't want to imply that he's a bad player. But as Daniel Negreanu said afterwards (I'm paraphrasing this) - "He just didn't do anything really stupid and got dealt some big hands."

I watched the show and I kind of thought the same thing. He seemed solid, didn't try any bluffs(that I saw) and caught some good hands. I think there was one where either noone raised the BB or just a moderate one that he called. He got 2 pair on the flop.

I think he had to have played pretty good to get to the final table though.

Of course he did. There's no way you can glean anything from the telecast of the final table. How many hands get shown in an hour? 10? 12? Maybe he did get good cards, but like Daniel said, he also didn't make any big mistakes, so he at least has to have some skill.

I agree that his win was a fun one to see for those of us who dream of the same type of miracle run at a WSOP event.

Drehobl has since made a final table on Ultimate Poker Challenge.

According to the report on pokerpages.com, he played conservatively while action players busted out left and right.

Of course, imagine the firestorm if he had won the main event.

i saw this guy in two nl tourneys at the mirage in two days, a thursday and following sunday, this past august and he made the final table in both. i don't remember how large the field was but i'm pretty sure there was at least 150 in each.

Except for maybe a well timed bluff here and there, isn't this what most all of us hope for in a large field tourney?

I believe he was referring to the final table.
