Default Does playing poker on a mooched wireless signal leave you vulnerable??

As a follow up to my previous post, if I play poker on an unsecured wireless signal that my computer just happens to pick up floating around my apartment, am I leaving myself vulnerable to hackers, malicious lurkers, etc.?

I did it for about a week before my internet was setup, besides timing out with top set and costing myself $60 when my signal went from incredibly low to dead, nothing bad happened.

Probably nothing bad will happen. But, anyone with a decent amount of knowledge can easily steal your login/password when you use an unsecured wireless network. Which, by definition, any wireless network that you can access without permission is.

There are people out there looking for people just like you. Specially in that kind of urban enviroment. They can easily sniff the packets and steal online banking information, neteller , etc.

Use 128-bit encryption most likely available with your router/network card.

WEP can be cracked but it takes a long time. Most people that want to have a secure network will constantly rotate their WEP keys to avoid it being cracked.

Each character in a WEP key has 16 characters associated with it. So if you have a long ass password protected by WEP it will take a long time to crack

How? The big poker sites, AFAIK, use SSL/TLS to encrypt network traffic en passant. If you're on an unsecured wireless network, it's easy for someone to see your packets but not to deduce the contents if you're using over-the-wire encryption.

If anyone has counterexamples (i.e., tcpdump sessions showing unencrypted traffic going to poker sites), I would love to know so that we can all mock the offenders in public.
