Default Confused about free cards

I confess to being completely confused by free cards.

When is it correct play to raise with the idea of trying to see a free card?

When is it correct to take a free card? As in, it's checked around to you and you have the last action in the hand, when is it proper to check?

And when, if ever, is it correct to give a free card? That is, you don't have last action but you believe based on prior play that those after you will check as well? Or if you have last action and can check?

This is something I just don't comprehend well. Any help?

Overcards and a gutshot is always a good time to go for a free card if you have position. Only give a free card if you are not likely to be outdrawn and a free card is likely to make a second best hand. This is far more effective at no-limit or pot-limit than limit.
