I can't really see how I wouldn't lose my stack on this hand since if the roles were reversed and he reraised on the flop I would have put all my chips in with a set...

you are correct. You would have lost your stack regardless at these limits as most people would call your flop raise (even an all in) with a set.

Having said that, you should still raise the flop to get out flush draws or at least give bad odds to draw.

I would tell you to consider check/fold after the board paired aces, but you are playin .50 bb, and I still think most of the time your straight is good. Nothing you can do, you should lose your money always when this happens at this level. I dont think you got too cute with the hand though, you played it well, sometimes youll just get unlucky.

I would have advised you to bet the pot on the flop as you currently hold the nuts.

Also, it appears as though you were probing his hand with the check on the turn. If you were asking a question, why didn't you listen to the answer? His $5 bet was an invitation for you to call - which you could have politely declined. I don't know PokerStars, but most Party bluffers would have bet the pot at you on the turn - so I'm especially wary of the inviting bet...

After he called your raise though, I would have checked and called a small bet on the river - and folded to a large one. If you couldn't shut him out with the raise on the turn, there's no reason to think he'll fold to your bet on the river.

I agree with the previous posts. At that those stakes it'll be hard to get that guy out.

I would say you would want to bet bigger on the flop and see how he plays it to see if you can smell set. Then when you see the paired aces you can smell defeat.
