Don't get me wrong -- i think you played fine, and they played sub-optimally. It seems an exaggeration to say they played it _horribly_, though.

I'm saying _had_ he played correctly, if he's the sort of player he appears from only one hand, you _would_ have had reason to fear the ace, and he (hopefully) wouldn't have gotten as much extra money out of you as it might seem at first glance.
