This is on the right track, but not quite right. You've actually found X (or n) needed to get your standard error within 0.5. What you want is for your true rate to be within 0.5.

I said I wanted to just pin my winrate down to plus or minus one BB. That means I need a SE of ~0.5. (Plus or minus two SEs from my sample mean).

I guess we're using different terminology. In probability, the sampling error for a mean is Z*(standard deviation)/n.
