I learned at lunch today from my Indian friend (slurpee Indian, not casino Indian) that according to Indian tradition, if you pass salt hand-to-hand to one another, it means you'll get in a fight with that person.
So you have to put the salt down, then the other guy picks it up. What other bizarre superstitions are there for various cultures? |

Don't pour out hot water or the Jin will curse your family or kill your children... or something. and i'm pretty sure jin is wrong, but similar to that.

On Okinawa (maybe mainland Japan too) it's bad luck to leave chopsticks stuck in a bowl of rice.

My first week on Oki, i went with some friends to one of their girlfriend's house. She cooked for us all. Someone left the chopsticks sticking out of his rice and she absolutely flipped out. I mean she went crazy. |

a rice bowl with chopsticks sticking out of them is one of the traditional items at a japanese funeral (food for the journey, etc). As i was raised, it's not so much bad luck as extremely rude.
