Do You See why?

Hypothetical. You are playing at a side game of the WSOP. You are given a choice between having the following two hands on the given board against Ad As. This is a cash game, there is $100,000 in the pot and your opponent has $2.06 left. He pushes all in. Which hand would you choose to have to call with:

Board: Ah 8d 6s

Hands you can choose from:

8s 8h
2d 3d

Well, this is pure math. Simply count the 2-card combinations that will win you the hand in each case.

8[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] 8[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]: Any combination with the last 8, except for the one with the last Ace => 43 combinations.

2[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] 3[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]: Any combination with two diamonds (34) and all combinations with a 4 and a 5 (9) => 43 combinations.

No cards will give a split pot. So, it doesn't really matter, both hands will win the pot 43/990 = 4.34% of the time.

2d 3d, runner runner makes it a more painful beat.

Oh yeah, that's so obvious now that you say it. I guess it wasn't pure math after all.

D.H., your final result is correct, however, your subtotals are wrong.

For the 2 3 hand, there are 36 combinations of diamonds but must eliminate the 8 which include the 6 as it makes a full house for opponent. So flush combinations are 28. There are 16 straight combinations, but we have already counted the the diamond one (4d5d), so total is 15. The 28 + 15 gives us the 43 combinations.

2 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] 3 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] folded preflop.

The 88 I call with.

Or just about any other hand I call with. It's $2.00 in a $100k pot.
