I heard that a girl in New Jersey died of this in the past week. Is this true?

I haven't heard anything about that.

However, I think it's amazing that people (and media) get all riled up about stuff like mad cow disease that breaks out sporadocally and kills so few people when it does. People are really paranoid about mass deaths occuring everytime a new little bug pops up.
