Default Golf Question (The Masters)

In regards to the Masters tournament, I was wondering if it's rare for the leader on 'day one' to go on and win the event (or maybe no one ever has)?

Thanks

It's rare but I'm almost positive it's happened.

I think Crenshaw was the last to do it.

It should become more common-place in future Masters however.

They used to re do the pairings on Friday, based on Thursday scores. Last folks out usually have the worst of it.

Now, they keep same pairings for Thurs and Friday. So the leader on Thurs isn't penalized for leading.

I seem to remember the year Tiger set the tournament record he led from start to finish.

97, he shot 40-30=70. I don't think he was leading, but it was quite the round.

Masters website says wire-to-wire champions are:

Craig Wood, 1941
Arnold Palmer, 1960
Jack Nicklaus, 1972
Raymond Floyd, 1976

It is my understanding that winning wire-to-wire means having a share of the lead after EACH round, hence more difficult than winning after leading the first round.
