Default crosspost from RGP

I thougth this guy made a good point.

[ QUOTE ]
How bizzare that the single most flag waving, patriotic, American flag wearing
lapel demographic in the entire nation (conservative Republicans) can't produce
one super patriot who actually served their country in Vietnam during a time of
war !!! It damn sure wasn't AWOL Bush who couldn't even serve in the National
Guard that his Daddy got him into so he didn't have to face combat in Vietnam.
It sure wasn't the likes of Dennis Hastert, Tom DeLay, Trent Lott, or super
patriot commentators like Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, Neal
Boortz, etc. None of that group (except for AWOL Bush) even served a day in
this country's military. Really ironic isn't it especially considering that the
past two Democratic Presidential candidates Kerry and Gore served honorably in
Vietnam and Gore's Dad had more clout than Bush's (he was a U.S. Senator).

Since 'nam was fought by the working class, and there aren't a lot of working class Republicans, I don't find it surprising at all.

Not true. I wasn't born until 1972. And since you're going to be snide about it you should probably kiss my American tax paying ass for supporting Isreal.

For the record: I was absolutely against both invasions of Iraq. In my view there were clearly more efficient altnernatives to advancing American interests than going to war with Iraq. I did take part in a protest against the first Iraq war. I was in college. No regrets.

I was going to take part in a protest against the most recent Iraq war. I was listening to a radio broadcast of the proceedings on ultra-liberal KPFA as I was driving up to San Francisco. All the speakers at the protest were muslim apologists so changed my mind and headed back to Artichoke Joe's to play poker.

I still believe our most recent decision to invade Iraq was a mistake. However, what's done is done and we should try our best enforce a relatively stable environment in the country. I don't think this can be done before June 30. I fully support our troops serving in Iraq and I fully support Rumsfeld's proposal to send more troops. Based on the limited information coming out of the news media, my guess is that most of the country is fairly stable. However, there remain pockets of strong resistance that must be severely crippled before any stable government institution can be put in place. The US military should do whatever it takes to accomplish this goal.

Default War records matter when...

It all depends on your timing

recap:

1992 - Bush (WWII vet) vs Clinton (draft dodger).

1996 - Dole (WWII vet) vs Clinton

Kerry says service doesn't matter

[ QUOTE ]
Sen. Kerry did make a judgment, in 1992, when Bill Clinton -- who did not serve -- was running against Sen. Bob Kerrey, a Vietnam veteran. After Bob Kerrey criticized Gov. Clinton, John Kerry said, "We do not need to divide America over who served and how."
