Default Sucky player/best player in the world

Every once in a while I do this:

I have AJo in EP. I call and 5 take a flop. The flop is A64. I open the betting but everyone calls. The turn is a 2. I open the betting and the next person raises. Of course she must have two pair or a flopped set. Everyone folds to me and I call. The river is another 2. I check and call. She shows me 62s.

Every once in a while I do this:

I have Ad4d in BB. It's a multiway pot so I raise my BB. Everyone calls. On the flop I miss, it's all black, and it's checked around. I even miss the turn. It's checked to an action player in late position. He bets and it's folded to me. I look at him. Ace high is good! I raise. It's folded to him and he calls. I think of saying out loud: "you know, you need a pair to call that raise." But I keep my mouth shut. The river I hit my 4. Check-check. I show. He shows K8o for no pair no draw. I take it down!

With your read, did you not bet the river because you were expecting no call?

Or were you going for a check-raise
