Hellmuth article in CP

Is this guy full of himself or what?

He says I pride myself on making great reads yada yada yada...ironic, as it turns out that he was continually making bad laydowns. Also, I have no idea why he continually shows his laydowns to his opponent.

Then, he goes completely bonkers about a bad beat that eliminates him. If his attitude in print is so poor (i.e. after he has had time to cool down), one can only wonder how childishly he might have acted at the table.

The man never offers any helpful analysis in his articles either.

Why does CP have this guy on their payroll?

Marketing, marketing, marketing. People read the magazine so they can get pissed off at him.

He's real big on himself. he sits at 2-4 tables on UB with 4K in front of him. I was playing with him and Annie at separate tables and asked her why she only has 300 at a 4-8 table while phil has 4K at 2-4...her response, "because I'm not an ass." Humorously fitting. but....

He also has 9 bracelets. Now either he's the luckiest man on the face of the earth, or his game is perfectly tailored to tournament play. I believe the latter and while I don't expect to learn anything from his columns, the man has game. Maybe he's the Steve Kerr of poker (a complete specialist) but both of them have about the same number of championships, so there's something to be said for that.

I liked the article. Hellmuth was very honest with how he felt and how he played. You say he made bad laydowns but hindsight is always 20-20. Notice at the end of the article how he second guesses his play and regrets the emotional outburst when he busted out.

I guess if you want the usual crap about how so and so played brilliantly (but in reality was just very lucky that day) and how the best player won the tournament and blah, blah, blah, then Hellmuth is not the writer for you. But I like his candor.

that he is. and people will read his articles, and a lot of people will probably accept it as the bible. and i'm thankful. a lot more people playing like that in ring games, all the better.

To be sure, the "bad laydowns" comment was from a results perspective. But it's still strange to see the description of those hands juxtapositioned with the " I am a great card reader" comment.

As for the regrets on the emotional outbursts, a man can cry wolf only so many times. Besides, he clearly does not have very many regrets given that the article itself is also an emotional outburst for the most part.

I'll give Phil this, his article title was dead-on. If he was actually running at "full power" he could have taken his opponents chips on either the AK or QQ hand. As for continually showing his laydowns I'm guessing the cameras have more than a little bit to do with it.

Hellmuth is an active player and isn't going to give up any more info than he must to earn his keep as a celebrity. Brunson has said he regretted putting so much of his strategy into SuperSystem

I like Hellmuth's article too. There isn't that much interesting poker, but usually good stories. Anything beats that Roy Cooke crap. What was this month's article about? Crap. Absolute crap.

Hellmuth is SO arrogant. But it's sorta funny. I gurantee the first time we meet...I'll be jawing in his ear. I just hope I can put a raw beat on him.
