Interesting. I'm glad I have never used one of those things, despite having worked for the cellular industry for many years designing components of the infrastructure.

I was taught in school that there are two ways that microwaves could potentially be harmful to humans. One is through the ionization of biological molecules, such as mutations in DNA which lead to cancer. The other is through burning. Because the energy of a microwave photon is proportional to its frequency (hv) and less than 1 eV, ionization was said to not be possible. Heat was said to be a concern only with very high power, such as from a transmission tower. This article raises some other interesting possibilities. It is plausible that low levels of radiation can physically alter cell membranes, and apparently this was proven.
