Default The Pope arrives in Vegas on 9/11

Well, not really. I'm zooming into the great city of ghostly hope on 9/11. I meet old friends on 9/12 but have one day "to myself and poker".

I wanted to rent a Pope outfit and give a haranguing speech from the overhead crosswalks at Flamingo and Las Vegas Blvd. But alas, I searched the web and could not find the proper costume, which would be essential to have. I also wanted to print up a few reams of indulgences and sell them at $25 a pop to the plebeian herds that mill the byways of the Strip. But such are time constrains that such dreams will not be fulfilled on this trip. Perhaps next time.

I’ll be staying at the Barbary Coast the first night. After that, at the Flamingo Hilton with my old buddies – were we are going to deplete our bankrolls playing Blackjack, Pai-Gow poker and Craps.

When I’m at the Barbary Coast I’ll keep my eagle eye out for any conspiracies that will no doubt be oozing from the very walls of the Casino. I’ll give a full report of all suspicious activities on my return.

Also I will be “holding forth” at the Victorian Room restaurant after I arrive, probably around ten o’clock. A ticket for a ten-minute audience with Zeno, Master of the Universe, Holder of the Sacred Keys of Knowledge and Vicar of the Wang-Dang-Doodle, will only cost 100k each (in gold please). Tickets will go fast so be sure to get in line. Audiences are available only from ten until Noon. After that, I will hover on down the Strip, in disguise of course.

I would price the indulgences variably depending on what people need. I think they will go fast in Las vegas. I can't believe you can't find a Pope outfit. Then again, I think you might be recognized as a non-pope. So maybe go for more anonymity as a run of the mill cardinal or some such. Or perhaps we can sit down and write up a new religion and start selling stuff. You can be the anti-pope. I just want a healthy cut of the proceeds.

ANyone ever try renting a priest outfit to play poker in?

No, but I used to have a conventioneer's badge to put on when I played in Vegas. It said: Ralph Spoilsport, Spoilsport Motors. Not three people in a hundred knew who Ralph Spoilsport was--they would give me a double take. Everyone else would call me Ralph. I kinda liked it; wearing the badge and being called Ralph made me feel loud and expansive!

I put this same post up on the News, views, and gossip forum and got a response. Someone found a costume store that says it rents "Nuns and Popes" costumes. Store is not too far from the strip right in Vegas. But this idea started last year when I saw 3 people dressed up playing Craps at the Flamingo. One was in a monk outfit, one was in a clown get up, and one was in an old-time prison uniform. No one really paid much attention to them. Typical.

I like your idea of a sliding scale for the indulgences. Price goes up the bigger the "sin". I was going to work on my Pope speech but got sidelined by work and other involvements, this silly forum being one. I think this is something worth doing. Perhaps we could team up sometime in the future. This is a sure moneymaker.
