OK, I was busy typing how horrible it is to push this river, but it seems that there're a lot of hands that appear to be really strong that you beat here. There aren't many hands that can call anything at all that aren't in that category.

The only hands that are going to call your river bet are any queen, 44, 77 and 56. The only hands that'd call less than an all-in on the river are 99, TT, JJ or a bluff-reraise. The former hand selection is more likely based on preflop and flop play, whilst the most likely (Qx) is maybe not going to reraise a smaller bet.

Therefore, I like your play, and I think I need to look at some of my play now - my initial thought is "half the pot!"

I'd bet 250-300. A thinking opponent would read that as the same as a push, but a fish might either call or raise. In the long run, I think you make the max by making a bet that he can call and still have a small but workable number of chips.

I used to take the conservative approach (probably about 300) until I realized I was missing out on a lot of value in these spots.

step 1) Push. Villian does not have the discipline to fold or have the courage to reraise with their Q-X and feels like they need to call any bet since they have trip queens even though their kicker is weak.

step 2) curse the poker gods when you opponent shows the Q-7 suited they limped in with in the small blind.
