Default work computer monitoring

When we got our laptops for work the IT guy said taht the company could monitor anything we did anytime we were connect to the internet (not just when connected to the company intranet). Is this true? I am in a hotel room now, can the company really monitor the sites I am goign to?

Countdown to your IT guy registering here and posting "yes, DrunkIrish05, I told you - we see ALL" in 5..4..3..

It's entirely possible in a number of different ways, although not likely in real time outside of your intranet. If you're really concerned about it, grab a bootable Linux distro such as Knoppix and use that to do anything you wouldn't want them to know about.

It's possible, but unlikely. That being said, fapping to pr0n on the company notebook from anywhere is a bad idea.

Now that I think about it, I'm guessing that, unless he was just bluffing, they may use a remote control software such as Dameware on all the laptops they build. This is done sometimes for when the IT guys need to remotely troubleshoot something on the laptops (ie: you have a problem, you call them, they connect to you remotely, via Terminal Services, Dameware, VNC, etc). In that case they could easily see everything you do - if they know your IP address. Even then, being in a hotel, there's the possibility you are behind a NAT anyway.

Confused yet? Run netstat -an|find "LISTEN" and/or net start from DOS, and if you know what to look for, you just may find something interesting. It wouldn't be too surprising really.
