Should I have pounced earlier, maybe on the turn? No reads.

Why not pounce on the flop? If you raise there, it actually disguises your hand more than if you wait til the turn oftentimes. In the OP hand, say villian holds JJ. You call the flop, then raise the turn. He instantly thinks you have a Q and maybe lays it down. Whereas if you raise the flop, he maybe 3-bets you to "protect" his overpair, or maybe slows down but still calls you down til showdown, thinking his JJ might be good.

raise the flop for the same reasons that the other poster said. And I would add one more: to build a big pot. If you raise the flop and bet 3/4 the pot on the turn, the pot will probably be big enough to put him in and stack him on the river. This is the kind of hand you want to play for a big pot against a single preflop raiser. Get as much money in on every street as you can, and that starts with raising the flop.
