it's all in the telling, only the beginning and the end are the same in the different versions, what comes in between is up to the teller to put their spin on it

Like CD56 said, it's all in the telling. Consider it a comic's equivalent of a jazz rendition.

When I was in college, we had a whole set of shaggy dog jokes that we would retell over and over again, none of which were really funny. But everyone got to put their own stamp on the joke, and that made it fun.
