Villain read you perfectly and knew his only chance to make another BB off of you was by you bluff betting the river.

He read hero's hand 100% perfectly and predicted hero not calling a river bet on an obviously scary board where AK is obviously not winning the pot by calling a bet on the river. Therefore, he checked hoping hero would bluff.

I think that you are giving this random guy way too much credit. More likely he just wasn't paying attention.
And even if you're correct, he only read Hero's hand correctly, but not Hero himself.
