Default Fast and Loose at SD

Here's a story from last weekend.

After some raising and re-raising, EP turns over cards at SD, LP sees A [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] 7 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] for the nut flush, and mucks his cards. About a 16 BB pot goes to EP as well. Then LP hears "you couldn't beat an ace high?" from another player.

Turns out EP had A [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] 7 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] - almost for sure a misread by EP. Too late for LP though, EP already stacking chips by the time he realizes his mistake.

I don't understand why some people get so fast and loose at SD trying to act faster than the dealer. What's the rush? Is it that great to not ahve to show your cards once you think you are beaten?
