Default Mumblings about ITM%, finish position, ROI

I was thinking about ITM% the other day, and it occurred to me that if you had a random group of people that played exactly alike (or all clicked 'away' and let the cards decide the game) they would eventually even out to 30% ITM each. This is obvious, of course, but it really made me think about how much of an accomplishment 35% ITM was NOT. Obviously at the 30% ITM level with an even distribution, you'd be losing money (the rake).

That got me started thinking about how very important your final finish is, much more so than the mere fact that you made it ITM. So I started with an assumed 100 games, with exactly 10 finishes in each position:

1st: 10
2nd: 10
3rd: 10
OOM: 70
ITM: 30%
ROI: -9%

So what does it take to get to 0%? Either:

1st: 11
2nd: 12
3rd: 12
OOM: 70
ITM: 33%
ROI: 0%

or

1st: 12
2nd: 11
3rd: 11
OOM: 70
ITM: 33%
ROI: 1%

The other thing was pretty revealing to me was the difference between ONLY finishing in a particular place. Again, what does it take to be at exactly break even:

1st: 0
2nd: 0
3rd: 85
OOM: 70
ITM: 55%
ROI: 0%

1st: 0
2nd: 41
3rd: 0
OOM: 70
ITM: 37%
ROI: 1%

1st: 21
2nd: 0
3rd: 0
OOM: 70
ITM: 23%
ROI: 5%

Again, this is all very intuitive. But seeing the numbers really drove home how important it is to focus on finishing at the top of the game, vs focusing on just getting to the money.

Maybe someone else will find this enlightening.

So, your point is ITM play is just as important as bubble play. Good job. Get back to work.

Eh. Everytime I cash, I make almost a 100% ROI.

That is where the fine line is making sure you make it the money(we all know 4th sucks) and making it the money with a chance to win it.

Lets keep this a secret, you're gonna make free blinds harder to come by on the bubble.
