More B&M discussion:

There are two players in the hand..... the flop comes A, Q, 2. Player 1 bets, player 2 calls. The turn is 6, player 1 bets, player 2 calls. The river is a 9, player 1 bets, player 2 calls.

At the showdown, player 2 turns up his cards and says, "I have a Q". Player 1 turns up his cards and says "I have an A". So, the dealer picks up player 2's cards and mucks them..... but just as he's doing so, player 2 says "oh hell, I had a nine too, I have two pair". A couple of other players at the table confirm the two pair, and comment that they wondered why he said "I have a Q", when he really had 2 pair. The dealer never looked at the second card for player two, was just going by the "I have a Q" and mucked the cards.

How would you rule?

These are some pretty effing retarded dealers, but the guy with two pair is also a douche.

If both cards were tabled, and not just the queen, the cards speak for themselves. Mucked or not if the hand is verifiable by other players or the other player in the hand, the pot is still awarded to the winning hand. If the hand is retrievable in the muck I would also attempt to retrieve the hand if there is further discrepancy.

The general rule in a casino is that cards can't be retrieved from the muck.

I think that once the cards were mucked... by the dealer or not... the hand is dead... it is the dealers mistake....

Cards can and will be deemed retrievable by the floor anytime it's in the best interest of the game.

The hand was tabled by the player and cards speak for themselves, regardless of how the player represeted the hand. The hand was also verified by other players at the table. This is a situation where cards can be retrieved from the muck. I have been in this situation before and explained to the other player that the hand was tabled, he held the winning hand, and the pot will be awarded to the player that held the winning hand. In most situations this is sufficiant. I've also seen both players agree to split the pot.

I'd rule that player 1 gets the pot by way of player 2's idiocy. I can't stand these "hide your kicker" types at the B&M who think they are giving away tons of info by showing both cards at showdown. At my regular B&M, both cards must be shown to take the pot (although this rule isn't always enforced...) The majority of the time if they aren't showing their kicker, it's trash anyway, and anyone with 1/2 a brain knows this, so what's the point in not showing.

If you don't know your hand, you don't deserve the pot in my book.
