Re: shin splints
Yes. They hurt like hell. Mine eventually went away. Make sure you have good shoes, and the right kind of shoes for your stride/feet.

Re: shin splints
Rest is the only cure, you can wrap your loser legs to help. But that will not cure it. You usually get this by running on hard surfaces, so when you get back in the action try running on something softer.

Re: shin splints
Rest may be the only "make it go away now" cure, but I think toughing it out and running more is a better solution. IIRC, once the proper muscles are in shape the shin splints go away. If he rests them off, next time he tries to run a lot he'll get them again.
This is going from what a coach told me in HS. |

Re: shin splints
The Duck walk is a good strech. Also plenty of rest and ice is key. Also if your running the roads and there is any long downhill parts take it easy going down. That could put a lot of extra stress on your shins.

Re: shin splints
I also heard that a lack of potassium can help cause shin splints. This was from a very seriour runner friend of mine. Maybe eat a banana?
