Default Non-traditional CD boxes - Why

So I'm working on putting my CDs onto my MP3 player and something strikes me: why do some artists release certain CDs on non-typical jewel cases? For example, two of Pearl Jam's records, Vitalogy and Yield, both come in weird looking paper boxes of various design. These boxes, of course, don't fit into all cd holders, it's harder to get the CD out etc. A bunch of tree-hugging hippie crap I guess.

Cheers,

Swede
