What do you think of the check on the flop and just calling on the turn? My reasoning behind checking was that there are no reasonable draws on this board, and it is likely my opponents need a runner runner to beat me.

Checking is fine, as it's about the only way you're getting paid off when ahead on this board. Since you're in position, you can better determine if the turn helped your opponent (he may as well turn his cards over when he checks the river). The way you played it, it looks very much like you're slowplaying, so he won't get too cheeky bluffing two streets at the trips. I like it.

He ended up having pocket 4s, so although highly unlikely, an innocent looking 4 hitting on the turn or river could have let him take my entire stack. Given this was the case, do you think the risk was worth the reward?

That depends on how you play it. You're not checking the turn behind, and he's about 1/23 to set the turn. The other 22 times you might get a bluff out of him (or he may really think he's best), so the play is probably good long term.

However, regardless of the turn card, if he leads out you can just call. You can just call a river bet too. That lets a worse hand bluff at you while cutting your losses vs a flopped set and other hands. Pretty much the only people putting money in here are bluffs/semi-bluffs and monsters that have you killed. Do you really want to be raising either one?
