Default Raising with a flush draw.

Party Poker 0.5/1 Hold'em (7 handed) converter

Preflop: Hero is Button with 6[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img], A[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img].
3 folds, CO calls, Hero calls, SB completes, BB raises, CO calls, Hero calls, SB calls.

Flop: (8 SB) 4[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img], J[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img], T[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] (4 players)
SB checks, BB bets, CO calls, Hero raises, SB calls, BB 3-bets, CO calls, Hero calls, SB folds.

Turn: (9.50 BB) 5[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] (3 players)
BB bets, CO folds, Hero raises, BB calls.

River: (13.50 BB) 7[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] (2 players)
BB bets, Hero raises, BB calls.

Final Pot: 17.50 BB

At first I was thinking of raising pre-flop with the intention of just trying to get it heads-up with the CO (60 vp$ip).

Then I tried going for the free-card play on the flop.

Everything is standard play though, right?

Cap the flop. Standard otherwise.

Nut flush draw = cap flop.

Everything else is fine.

Eh, I think sometimes it's more EV to not cap the flop here.

Well, I'm going to crawl back into my hole now because I can see nothing standard about capping the flop because of a flush draw. What's that all about? Anyone?

You are forcing the SB to call two cold, and with only 3 other players in you need everyone to call to make your raise correct. Unless he's a major calling station, it may have been a mistake to raise without one more player in or better position relative to the bettor. It's a close decision though and probably doesn't make a huge difference in the long run.

A6s is not a hand you really want to play heads up with, so I wouldn't raise preflop. You want as many callers as possible so you win a big pot when you make your flush.

Nice hand overall.

I agree. You have only a 35% chance of making the flush and therefore only should bet/raise if three or more players are calling you. I guess the A may add a little more equity, but since you're being three bet into, those outs may not be good.

On the flop you're going to win this hand around 35% of the time, but you're only contributing 25% of all the bets going in. This = good. (It's called a pot equity edge or some such. I read that in a book once.)

You also might get a free card.

You need 2 callers to break even on the flop bets, not 3.

(But he's got 3 anyway.)
