45 degrees? You want them going diagonally down the page? I don't think you can.

This won't help him if he wants some text going the normal way and other text going sideways.

I think the way to go with this is to create a text box, type what you want in there, and then rotate the box. But while I was just trying that for you, the rotate feature was greyed out when I had the text box selected...not sure why.

If you can get your hands on Quark or something like that, it's a piece of cake. MS sucks.

This worked when I tried it, not sure why it wouldn't. Then again, Word does some strange things sometimes.

How did you people figure anything out before finding 2+2?

I typed "sideways" into MS Word help (imagine that!) and the following came up:

Change the orientation of text

You can change the text orientation in drawing objects, such as text boxes (text box: A movable, resizable container for text or graphics. Use text boxes to position several blocks of text on a page or to give text a different orientation from other text in the document.), shapes, and callouts, or in table (table: One or more rows of cells commonly used to display numbers and other items for quick reference and analysis. Items in a table are organized into rows and columns.) cells so that the text is displayed vertically or horizontally.

Click the drawing object or table cell (cell: A box formed by the intersection of a row and column in a worksheet or a table, in which you enter information.) that contains the text you want to change.
On the Format menu, click Text Direction.
Click the orientation you want.

I typed "sideways text word" into Google and a bunch of articles like this came up:

Text Effects

Sideways text

One way to change the direction of your text is to insert a text box, and then change the direction of the text. This is probably best suited to making short sentences or phrases stand out. A whole paragraph set up in this way would be very difficult to read. It may look good in a newsletter or other "display" document.

To do this:

1. Insert a text box.

2. Enter your text into the text box.

3. Use the text box toolbar button for Text Direction. Or choose Format – Text Direction.

4. Choose a direction for your text.

5. Click on OK.

6. Modify other text box attributes as required (line, fill, shadow, etc).

Note that the letters don’t appear underneath each other, but rather it’s as if you changed the orientation of the page.

Edited to add, if these exact directions don't work for you, do a Google search including the version of Word you are using.
