Default bittorrent help

Hey guys,

So I'm using BT for the first time and I'm a little confused. I've successfully installed and it's downloading the file I want, but the connection speed sucks (~10k/sec). Is this normal? I'm on a cable modem.

I realize BT works by trading pieces of the file so do I just have to wait until I have enough of the file to start trading more? Will the speed pick up as time goes by? It's a ~4gb file so I'd rather not have to wait 5 days to download it.

Sorry to be a noob.

Thanks for the help,
J

EDIT: It's actually uploading twice as much (my upload is a whopping 24 kb/sec).

change the port in the preferences most likely. make them some range of numbers than the default setting. try 6881 to 6889.

EDIT BASED ON YOUR EDIT: that's a pretty reasonable speed now. depends on how many other users are swapping it. i average around 25-30kb/s

thanks devil,

I hadn't thought about the popularity of the file, I think it said there were only like 14 seeds (which I guess is small?) for it so that probably explains everything. Ho-hum, I'll just twiddle my thumbs for awhile.

Thanks again,
J

Also try limiting your upload speed.

Thanks, this helped quite a bit. I dug into a couple FAQ's and got my speed up to ~40kb/s down and I'm uploading at a fixed 20kb/s. Seems to be working fine now...I guess my original expectations were a bit overzelous (only a day and a half left to go!). Thanks,

lol speaking of torrents. did anyone who previously used lokitorrent.com notice the change today? apparently the MPAA finally took them over and replaced the front page with this threatening and powerful image:

oh well, lokitorrent kinda sucked anyways.
