Allegheny County homicide detectives are investigating the shooting death this morning of a Penn Hills man who killed himself by accident while driving with two friends.

Patrick Finley, 22, of Glendale Road, was pronounced dead at 3:50 a.m. inside the cab of a pickup truck just minutes after being shot.

The Allegheny County Coroner's Office today determined Finley died of a gunshot wound to the head and ruled it an accident.

Finley and two friends were drinking and playing video games at his home when they left in a pickup truck, according to the coroner's office.

Finley took along his handgun, which Penn Hills police Chief Howard Burton said he legally owned.

As they drove, there was shooting from the truck at stop signs and other objects, according to the coroner's office. It was not clear who was doing the shooting, but at 3:37 a.m., a shot went off inside the vehicle and Finley's friends found him wounded, the coroner's office said.

The friends drove Finley back to his home, where they informed his family.

County police Assistant Superintendent James Morton said that at this point, there did not appear to be foul play.
