Default Benefits of a job in IT

For all those "undecided" people in college I say go for a degree in IT.

You get to surf the internet all day long and chalk it up as "research". I bet some of the people with the highest number of posts here (and on most message boards) are in IT.

One of the reasons for that is the long hours they put in

I had an internship this summer in an IT department and basically all I did was surf the web all day. The best part was that my boss actually told me to do it or "you'll get too much done in one day." I didn't complain.

IT is great...i get to boss around a team of grubs, sit in my office and play poker and look at porn all day while browsing this god awful forum (and many others)

the nights/weekends/holidays that i have to work on occasion can't hold a candle to getting a fat paycheck while coming to work dressed like a goon and kicking back with my feet up

it's good to be the boss (P.S. work for a small company, or you'll never enjoy any of these benefits...and possibly have to wear a shirt with a collar on it)

Pros: people rely on you, every company (just about) needs IT folks, you get to be condescending, free computer upgrades (on saturdays, so I'm told).

Cons: you may, one day, kiss a girl.

mmm. possibly? I work in IT, but I can tell you plenty of ppl are plenty nervous about information workers abroad (India & China) displacing them. rightly so, as someone running a company; if you had to pay someone;
1. in Banglore $5/hour to do the same job you pay someone
2. here $15/hr to do (not to mention paying their insurance costs, etc)

who would pick #2?

IT salaries have also been stagnant over the last couple of years (as a whole, please don't reply me with, "not me, i got a 10% raise last year!"...plenty of ppl didn't) and products constantly change and if you don't keep up, eventually, you are obselete.

Also, depending on your personality, it may not be a fulfilling career; as nothing you do as an IT-ant will have significance to anyone in 5-10 years.

But, this may be a "grass is greener" thing...how many people are really fulfilled by their careers?

$15 an hour if you suck at your job lol. Even entry level pays more than that.
