Default Clueless on Chips -Please Help

The guys I play with, both in the dorms at school and back home, have plenty of sets so I never needed my own chips to play. However I have the opportunity to get a 500 chipset through PokerSourceOnline.com and I was wondering if I should take it.

I'm clueless when it comes to chips. The biggest thing that I do not know about is the weight. The ones that are offered are 9, 11.5, and 13.5 grams. Not really sure which ones are considered 'standard' but I hate the feel of light chips.

Here is the link to the chips that are offered:

If anyone can offer up a suggestion I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks

If you don't really want or need the chips, go get some Best Buy gift cards or something.

The Best Buy cards are probably what I will end up doing, along with a few books and a donation or two in their charity section. However I still would like to know the difference in weight sizes just in case I need the chips someday.

From my limited chip experience:
I have used the 11g dice chip and I think they're fine. I haven't used the 12 or 13g chips and I think 9g would feel a little weird.

Just be warned that the chips they offer are NOT clay. They're "composite", a word that here means "shitty weighted plastic". But they're better than drug store chips.

The 11.5s are the standard ABS composites, plastic wrapped around a metal slug. The 9g and the 13.5g are clay composite, but only the 13.5 chip feels like it. I think the 13.5 chips are actually quite good value. The only knock on them is that they get marked up VERY easily.

Well, I own a set of 1000 of the 13.5s, and one more knock on them is the somewhat chalky residue that develops on the chips during shipment and stays until they're good and broken in.

I'm okay with my 13.5 gram "Casino" chips, but if I had it to do over again, I would get a different type.

Interesting. I always thought the casino chips I picked up for souvenirs in LV felt as heavy as the dice chip I have.

I'm sure someone has done this already, but it looks like a science experiment at work tomorrow!

Already done my man. I've found that casino chips are most frequently 10g to 10.5g. The whole "heavier is better" thing became a measuring stick when the Chinese 11.5g plastics flooded the market. That just happened to be the weight that they were made once they added the steel slugs to them, and suddenly everyone thinks that they need heavy chips or the chips are subpar.

It cracked me up when I brought my Chipcos over to a buddy's house, and he "weighed" one in his hand and said with a look of dismay, "Are these the full 11.5 grams?"
