I hate this frigging game: Catch Phrase

Ok, so my girlfriends roomate got this game for christmas and so I went over to play it last night, and the scoring system is the most bullshit thing i've ever heard of in my whole life.

The game is basically like taboo and hot potato. You pick catagories on the little machine and then start the timer, you then try and get your team to guess the word that shows up on the screen, and when they get it, you pass it off to the other team and they have to get their team to guess the next word. So basically you sit in a circle alternating team members.

Ok, so instead of tallying up the scores so the best team will most likely win, they score like this: The timer counts down through a series of beeps that go faster and faster, and when the timer runs out the team who doesn't have the machine in their hands gets a point.

What I noticed is that about 80% of the time you started the timer, the other team ended up with it, no matter how many words were guessed during the time.

Also, as you can tell, it relies on an incredible ammount of luck, your team could be completely retarded, yet you could win a lot of the times because you simply took a rediculous ammount of time to guess the clue, and then about 3 seconds after you passed the machine on the timer ran out.

Another great game to play with the family or friends is Scene It, the DVD game.

I used to have chick neighbors that loved this game. I immmediatly saw the flaws you mentioned in the scoring system, so i turned it into a drinking game.

The Rules.

Catchphrase the drinking game is no longer a team event. Teams suck, and they always let you down. So, each person has a go with the catchphrase unit. They can select any category they wish, and start whenever they feel comfortable. Once the game has begun, the player attempts to describe as many words as possible, without violating any rules. Someone must be a scorer, and at the end of the allotted time, we tally up the drinks as follows.

The benchmark number of words you must get is 8. Any number less than 8 results in a drink for you for each missed word.
Any number in excess of 8 result in a drink you can distribute.

Any skipped word results in a drink added to your total.

Any rules violation (definitions of cheating in this game were always vague) results in two drinks added to your total.

At the end of your turn, the scorer announces the tally. For instance, if you correctly described ten words to the crowd, but skipped 2 words and cheated once, that would be 2 drinks for you. If you correctly described 8 words, with no infractions, you distribute a drink.


This made the game more tolerable, especially since i no longer had to be divided into some stupid team with stupid people as a "handicap." More exciting was the uno-attacks drinking game where you had to take a drink for every card it shot at you. Which would sometimes be 15. Good times.

I will pass this along to my friends, as this is a much better way to play the game and make it actually fun.

I think with all the people guessing the word and not just your team 8 is a pretty good benchmark.

I have this problem with Boggle. I haven't lost to anybody since I was about 12, and I usually have 4x their score or more...

I don't know what it is, I can rock everyone in yahoo word racer yet I get totally destroyed playing boggle.

Maybe its the ability to type like 1,000,000 words a minute without fear of looking stupid when 1/2 of them aren't even words.
