Default Whole grain leather boots... how do I take care of them?

I have a set of Vasque Sundowners that I've used and abused for 10 years. I love em to death. I bought some leather conditioner to see if I can bring back the color in the leather. It was this lotion like stuff that you put on and waited till it dried. The problem is that now the stuff is crusted all over and is a pain to get rid of. Is there a better way? Some kind of oil?

sundowners are gortex. so only a silicone based works well. but you can always go over the whole shebang with snow seal. kind of a beeswax. it will hurt breathability but will rewaterproof them. old books look worn. you cant make them new or want to.

you probably didnt warm them up before you put the stuff on. thats the secret.
