Default short stack desperation - getting shat on for my play

11 left in tourny at casino we are alreay in the monry 20th pays $454 up to 15k for first.

blinks 15k/30k antes 4k I have 37k UTG after my ante goes in
everyone tightened up 5 min ago after a big hand which eliminated 3 players at once, even the chip leader appeared to be laying back.

i got J5o utg and raised all in, everyone folded to the BB mathematically BB has to call but he also had enough chips to pay BB and SB and still be able to make a move, took this into consideration and hoped he might just pass.

bottom line he called and every says "J5 what are you doing" I know i can wait and play my BB next hand and make my stand there. any comments.

btw BB called with 69o and i won the hand

Nice job on your part. Obviously, you are smarter than I because I would have folded and took my chances with BB. Good job.

You have to push there with any two cards.

Tell them that J5 is your lucky hand and you had to go with it. Well played.

You should have folded, and here's why. Even if you double-up this hand you will have more than 1/3 of your chips automatically in the pot for the BB. This means you have to play your BB basically no matter what. Thus, its silly to push with any 2, when you are going to have to play any 2 next hand regardless of whether or not you win. Fold your J-5 and hope some idiot busts out and you get a pay jump.

Nobody is folding a 60k + pot for 7k, so you have no folding equity, so you should only be pushing on above average cards (provided nobody is about to go bust). j5 is decidedly below average.

I say the same thing to anyone who is wondering if their push with a short stack with XY hand was OK: When you are shortstacked, and will be blinded off shortly, you have to pick a hand to make a stand with. You did, and I don't think there is anything wrong with that, or with the hand you picked.

I would ask myself three questions in your situation:

1) What are the chances everyone is going to fold it to me?
2) What are the chances I'm going to have a better hand in the BB with just about all my money going into the pot?
3) Do you feel lucky, punk? Well, do you? (just a little Dirty Harry... not meaning to call you a punk)

Obviously, the chances are extremely poor for question 1 (I don't see how the BB could NOT call 7k more to see 5 cards no matter what his holding is). In fact, as BB I wouldn't have looked at my cards and I'd call without looking. So, going to question 2, you are 55% chance to get a better hand in BB. Additionally, maybe everyone has crap next hand and it's folded to you (which is a small possibility, given the sudden tightness). After considering these options, I'd have folded the J5o, as I think I have a slightly better chance.

However, it is so close that it really comes down to question 3. If you feel it with this hand, go for it.
