Default How to make Phil Hellmuth lose it completely

As you may know, there is a television poker program over here which uses under the table cameras to show the hole cards and generally does a good job of providing entertainment for both the poker expert and the kitchen table player IMO.

Well last night, Phil Hellmuth was on, defending his title (he won the previous series). He found himself heads-up with Robert "Le Dangereux" Cohen, an aggressive and unpredictable French player (if you know have ever played in France you will not have needed the first two adjectives) who does not speak a word of English. Robbed of his speech play, Hellmuth floundered like a beached whale. He tried to get his opponent to understand his needling by means of the old tactic of speaking louder to a foreigner (I thought he was going to start adding -o on to the end of the words) but when even this did not work he was flummoxed, and eventually threw all his chips in on the river with one pair only for his opponent to turn over a flush. He then tried to claim that his opponent had not called (after Phil had turned his cards over). Now I've never met Phil Hellmuth and have nothing against him personally but it was extremely funny, and I urge you to beg, steal or borrow a tape as it is well worth it.

If I must add some strategic content :-), be warned that if you come over here, we don't care a flying **** for your reputation so don't rely on it winning you any pots !!

Andy.

Sounds like a great episode. Sorry I missed it. Do you know if this show ever runs in the US?

I have HEARD via RUMOR MILL - MEGA RUMOR MILL that he is coming to Minnesota for the Canterbury Fall Classic in a week...this from one of our tournament directors last week.

in fact I expect to see a few pros here, since this is our first big tournament...and quite frankly, it's essentially all we do except a few casino games in the back and the horse racing. I have also heard we have one of the best card rooms in the country, probably because it's more here due to horse racing then casinos...they can't replace the tables with slots, so they just offer the only poker in Minnesota.

Of course, the odds of my actually playing a game with him or getting to his final table or heads up are pretty slim...but I'm so supremely self confidant I doubt he could rattle me anyway.

Put Pamela Anderson over on the other side and get her shaking, and hell,,,,I'm liable to muck pocket A's....but most people don't rattle me...I've seen too much bad play from pros on TV...I know to some degree you do need luck to win. and heck...I may be the luckiest bastard alive, and if not...I didn't waste two years studying the bible for nothing.

Lord...please let me get pocket A's and flop a royal flush.

I have been to Canterbury, it is a nice room. can not say much for comps or for places to eat. Have allways heard that whenever poker opens in a new area there are some easy pickings, so when Canterbury first opened I flew up from Texas. the rumor proved to be very un-true....at one point I was playing 15-30 which was bigges avaiable and all but one player was from out of town, they came for same reason as me...the one player was a local who had run a game there before Canterbury opened!!!not a soft game

no doubt that Phil has big poker talent and even bigger EGO, at least I think that is what causes such actions when he bombs out. unfortunately for him, he has shown his ass several times like that.

about the talking--earlier this year (not sure, but it may have been at 2,500 event at WSOP) Phil got down to heads up, and I think he lost it because his asian opponent OUTTALKED him...some thought the talking was overdone, but seem to me that Phil just got a large dose of his own medicene.

Nope....food isn't free (although soda pop is) - in many ways, it's one of the side benefits that it's in a horse track, so it doesn't get shoved around and neglected like it was a casino...but as a result, comps aren't like at a casino.

and if you thought slots were noisy...get 30 guys in the cardroom yelling for their horse to come in...

and if you don't like their menu...it's a 4 minute drive to downtown Shakopee. Not the worse prices in the world, esp. for the big ol' basket of fries. I understand they sell the food at a loss

But it's a big ass room with lots of space and decent promotions...we have a bad beat jackpot that gets up

to almost $70000 sometimes....including one on football sundays that'll be at 100,000 till it gets won.

As of the 15th, the room also turns non-smoking...which ain't too bad.

Now that it's been a year, I think probably all that's left in the 15-30 games are locals....I don't know if you were aware - but as of August 1st or so, Canterbury started 30-60 games....I've heard the 15 - 30 games are now looser and there's almost always one 30-60 and 15-30 going.

You can't have pocket aces and flop any sort of flush let alone a royal one.
