Tournament Return?

I've never played in a tournament before and I am thinking about trying out one of the small local hold 'em tournaments. I've read some on tournament strategy but what I'm wondering is how people decide which tournaments are worth entering?

What type of prize pool are you looking for when you enter a tournament?

What ratio of prize monies to entry fees (and rebuys) do you look for?
