Default Too Fancy?

Should I have just re-raised originally to get it heads up with the short stack? I thought he would push to reopen the betting and I could push over the top. I really felt the big stack would fold his hand, but he didn't. This was a bad beat, but I wonder if it was because I got too fancy.
