Tunica- Is gambling authorized by the state, or the city?

i know in vegas, gambling is authorized by the state.

How about tunica, ms?

state...gaming licenses are statewide.

edit: Technically....casinos must be on water...so in tunica they just piped the Mississippi River under the gaming areas of the buildings.

I believe it's by the county. But in the county the gaming portion of the casino has to be on water. The Grand casino is on the northern border of the Tunica county line. Which means it's closest to Memphis. There have been several attempts to get gambling legalized in Desoto county (which borders Tn).

yes ...above is true, but first must be legalized by the state. So we're kinda saying the same thing.

Both the state and the COUNTY. There is no city to speak of.

The state of Mississippi has already authorized gambling in any county on a waterway that is used as a stateline (this means all counties along the Miss River and the Gulf Coast) with the requirement that the county must approve it by a vote.

When Tunica is referred to, it is the county and not the city. The town closest to the casinos is actually Robinsonville.

DeSoto county which lies between Tunica and Memphis has refused and mostly likely will always refuse to legalize gambling. The socioeconomic makeup of DeSoto is completely different from Tunica. It's far richer, far whiter, and far more conservative. That's not to say DeSotoans don't gamble, they do. They would just prefer it to be in their backyard and not their front yard. At least that way they can keep a straight face when complaining of the ills of gambling. Besides, if some group did try to bring gambling to DeSoto, the religious groups opposed could always count on the Tunica casinos for money support in their campaign to stop it. Ain't politics grand.

ahh... didnt know that the state authorizes, but only if the casino is touching the river. and if the county meets that state requiremnt, then they have to approve of gambling in their county.

any restrictions on gambling locations in Nevada?

I lived in DeSoto County for a few months and agree with this assessment entirely. It truly is a different area than Tunica County.
Very White-Conservative in DeSoto.

Tunica County was desperate for anything was my general impression...although I wasn't here when they legalized it so I don't really have much of a handle on what it was like pre-casinos.
But it's my understanding that Tunica County was the poorest county in Mississippi....which is the poorest state in the country.

DeSoto county already has a decent business presence.

However, if DeSoto did legalize it (which I don't think would happen) it would really take away from the Tunica market since it would be that much closer to Memphis.
It's about a 35-40 minute drive to Tunica for much of Memphis....a bit more for the eastern suburbs of Memphis.

There is some talk of trying to get it legalized somehow IN memphis but since it's not legal in Tennessee this seems to be unlikely in the near future....but I really don't know all the details.

The old Pyramid Arena is vacant now because of the recently built Fed-Ex Forum (for the Memphis Grizzlies and Memphis Tigers) and there has been some talk swirling around about making the Pyramid a really big casino (this has been on the TV news, newspapers, etc).
But there are other rumours circulating too.

There's been talk of turing the Pyramid or Mud Island into a casino since Tunica legalized. Actually, I think Mongo promised in one of his mayoral campaigns to turn Mud Island into a combination prision/lawless free-for-all zone.

Did you hear about Prince Mongo suing the West Memphis WalMart? Prince Mongo doesn't wear shoes and goes everywhere like that. The store manager of the West Memphis WalMart where Mongo shops alot told him that he couldn't shop in the store without wearing shoes. Prince Mongo's lawyer filed a lawsuit saying that not wearing shoes was part of his religion and the people from his planet - Zambonia - can't wear shoes. The end result was that Prince Mongo can now shop in the West Memphis WalMart without wearing shoes. I wish he would of won when he ran for Mayor, he certainly would be a better mayor than Willie is.

There was actually an effort to get casinos in Memphis at the same time the Tunica ones were getting started. The church leaders in Memphis mounted a very aggressive and hostile stance to the casinos and they ended up in Tunica. Some of them even said it was a white conspiracy to get black people's money - yes believe it or not, people like the Rev. Bill Adkins said that. It was also really, really hilarious to hear them say that if casinos came to Memphis it would bring alot of crime to Memphis. Crime in Memphis - now we wouldn't want that would we? As far as the Pyramid goes, there are some people who claim the Pyramid was built on some obscure Indian territory and that the tribe could put a casino there...we'll see what happens..
