Default Movie Review: Bubba Ho-tep

I'd never heard of Bubba Ho-Tep before I watched it on DVD this weekend. It was ridiculous, but highly entertaining. Bruce Campbell and Ossie Davis were great together. There were some slow spots, but the dialog was great. Lots of quotable lines.

Bruce Campbell is the B movie king. He was the star of the "Army of Darkness" movies. Ossie Davis is just a small character actor.

The movie is set in a nursing home. Campbell thinks he's Elvis. It's not clear if we're supposed to believe him or think he's crazy. Ossie Davis, who's black, thinks he's JFK. The two of them try to save the nursing home from a mummy who's killing other residents.

It's all very silly, but funny.

It is a very silly movie, but it does have some serious overtones, especially near the end. Campbell really shows that he's more than just a B-movie star with this movie. I can't imagine anyone else playing Elvis as convincingly as he did. 4/5 stars - there are a few brief parts where it drags a little, then comes back to life with a great one liner.

Spoilers in white -

The movie makes more sense if Bruce Campbell really is Elvis, so it would fit with the theme of the story a little better. I think there's a short soliloquy on this, with Elvis/Haff saying basically, "In my movies, I just played a hero, now I can actually be one."

Doesn't that depend on how much money you have?

Not really, is it the kind of movie I can watch over and over?

Otherwise I rent.

I almost never watch movies over and over, but I've watched this one twice in the last week. So yeah, I guess it's worth $20. To me anyway.
