The elevator in my apartment building has only two buttons, U and D. When you
push the U-button the elevator goes up 8 floors (or not at all if there aren’t 8 floors available); when you push the D-button it goes down 11 floors (or not at all). It is possible to get from any one floor to any other floor. However, if the building had one fewer floor it would be impossible to do this. How many floors are in my apartment building? How would your answer change if the U-button took you up 9 floors, and the D- button took you down 12 floors? Some of these are simple, some are more interesting. |

Re: 7
111 Floors. In order to move exactly one floor up or down, you must move 56 floors in one direction, then 55 floors in the opposite. Therefore, whatever floor you're on, you must have the ability to move 56 floors in one direction.
If the elevator moved 9 and 12 floors, you would be stuck only getting to floors divisible by 3. |
