Default What is O-8 \"protected\" low?

Obviously I'm new to O-8, so my question is: what is a "protected" low in O-8 and why is it so important?

Is it more immune to being counterfitted, or perhaps just that it's less likely to be held by others? Please explain and give examples, thanks.

AFAIK, it's a low which cannot be counterfeited by a single card.

e.g. hand: A34K, flop: 268 (a single A or 3 on turn or the river would still leave you with the nut low). The obvious advantage is that you can be rather sure of your hand and freeroll against other identical, but unprotected lows (so EV wise, you get more then your fair share of the low half of the pot.)
