Default Midpair w/ Overcard Kicker

Under what circumstances is it correct to bet or call when you hit a mid pair on the flop with an overcard kicker?

General, I know, but I am trying to gain a better understanding of certain concepts.

Your question isn't specific enough.

A more specific situation would be nice, but generally I would bet mid pair with an overcard when shorthanded. Definitely heads-up and possibly 3 handed on the flop when I think I have a good read on my opponents, or if I know their post-flop play is weak. Beware a dangerous flop (straight/flush possibilities) and remember who did what preflop.
