Gin Rummy
Reading up a bit on Stu Ungar recently, and its always mentioned that he was probably the best gin rummy player ever.
Sorry if this sounds stupid...but isn't there a lot more luck involved in that than poker? How do you get good? Can anyone link me to a theory website? |

Re: Gin Rummy
Gin and poker have a reasonably overlapping skill set, especially when it comes to hand reading. Knowing your opponent's motive for taking or discarding a particular card can let you know what to hang onto and lay off, if draws you have may be dead, etc.
Sorry, I don't know of a website about gin. But if you spend half an hour playing Yahoo gin, you'll understand. |

Re: Gin Rummy
thanks for the reply.
Yeah, the thing is, before reading about Ungar, I totally thought of gin rummy as almost a purely luck game that kids play. I never knew there was a lot of skill involved and that its so complex. |

Re: Gin Rummy
Chip Reese said that Ungar had a knack of visualizing his opponents hand after one or two cards were played. That is what made him so good.

Re: Gin Rummy
not in casinos, but there are huge cash gin games all over the US. look for them at country clubs especially.
yes they are definately worth playing if you are a good gin player. the old grouchy men often leek money from their thick wallets in these games. |
