Hello, I play on Party Poker, and just went broke losing a 100 this week, I played .5/1 limit , 5+1 SNG's, and 10+1 sng's, I have been consistently doing well with the 10+1 SNG's and went from 50-200 and then I went back down to 100 by playing bad at ring, I played some more SNG's and consistently did well but I was stupid and went to ring where I took 25 to 25 nl and .5/1 limit, and always did bad, and I got down to around 25 , and eventually went broke. I finally learned I should have sticked to the SNG's lol, but I'm wondering now are the ring games tougher or do you think I'm doing something wrong. or a bankroll problem. I'm always worrying about my bankroll. I have played poker for about 2 years and feel I'm pretty good but I really must not be.

There's really no way to say from short-term results. You should request hand histories and select some hands to post in the micro forum so the posters there can evaluate your play.

What books have you read? Have you played mostly online or live? Home games or B&M casinos? Online is tougher at a given limit. If you play mostly home games with equally (in)experienced friends, you may not have an accurate impression of your skill level.

wow you sound a lot like me. I was doing the same thing, making money off SNG but then blowing it in limits. Recently though with some sound advice I've been doing quite well at the .5/1 but it is a totally different game from SNGs and I was run into trouble before i realized I was trying to play limit like SNGs in some cases and it just didnt work. I suggest reading the heavily suggested books by lee jones winning low-limit hold em and then ed millers small stakes holdem. The second is going to probably teach you to become the player you eventually want to be but jones' is a good starting point.

First of all, your bankroll is too small for .5/1. You really need 300 big bets worth to ensure you don't go broke (assuming you're a winning player to begin with). If you want to learn to win at limit games, I suggest you start out at a site that has micro-limits (.05/.10, .20/.10, etc). Your money will last longer in these games, so you can gain the experience you need to become a winning player.

to be honest i could beat low limit sngs before i was even a break even ring game player. once i learned to beat ring games consistantly then i began crushing sngs. although sngs got really boring to me very quickly. i do like the 2 table sngs for now.

Party .5/1 is a fickle beast. My initial deposit was 100BB; when I made the deposit I was not aware of the 300BB recommendation; however, if you have some more funds, then small 100BB deposits as you need them will be fine.

I did not have to re-deposit any funds in my case; I think this is due to luck (i.e. catching cards early on to build up the bank roll). I have had two bad downswings along the way, as a part of the learning process, and if they had hit early on (with only my measly 100BB initial funds), then I would've busted out. You must factor in getting sucked out and bad beats, which contribute to downswings, as a part of the game; your job is to minimize their impact.

Having said that, I think after you get some more experience under your belt and learn the subtleties of microlimit you should have no problem with becoming a quasi-break-even player. This is when the real learning begins. When I did not have to fear busting out I could play strong TAG poker. Now my roll can support higher limits, but I still play a lot of .5/1 since it is fairly straightforward there.

Go to microlimit forum & post hand histories; just ask for the opinion of others, but don't post the results of the hand since that can yield portentous responses.

As far as the SNGs go, I have played a few of them. In fact I have got two firsts and a second in $50+5 in the past week. But I consider SNGs more like gambling since you must need many, many buy-ins to support this (I could be wrong though).

To me, SNGs are like buying penny stocks and .5/1 ring is like buying shares of gillete or some big corp like that; I mean people are always going to need to shave or raise preflop with 47o....
